Fiber is commonly used for backbone links, long distances, building-to-building connections, high-capacity uplinks, outdoor pathways, and areas affected by electromagnetic interference. Standard copper Ethernet channels are generally limited to 100 meters, including patch cords, while properly designed fiber can support much longer links.
